How children learn at Dovecote

Young children learn by doing. They explore, move, communicate, create, experiment and make sense of the world through play.

At Dovecote, our curriculum is designed around these natural ways of learning. Guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, our experienced Early Years team creates purposeful experiences for children aged 12 months to 3 years, giving them opportunities to discover new ideas, follow their interests and develop at a pace that feels right for them.

Small class sizes allow our teachers to know each child well and provide the individual care, attention and encouragement that are so important during these early years.

The EYFS at Dovecote

At Dovecote, the EYFS gives children a strong foundation for learning while leaving plenty of room for curiosity, choice and play.

The 7 areas of learning are woven naturally through each day. Children build language as they listen to stories and talk with friends, develop coordination as they move and play, and grow socially and emotionally as they learn to share, take turns and express what they need. Early literacy and mathematics emerge through books, songs, counting, patterns and everyday problem-solving, while art, music, imaginative play and time spent exploring the world around them encourage creativity and discovery.

Rather than treating these areas as separate subjects, our teachers bring them together through meaningful experiences that feel natural to young children. Learning is active, enjoyable and appropriate to each child’s stage of development.

Learning through play

Play is at the heart of life at Dovecote because it is one of the most powerful ways young children learn.

A puzzle can encourage concentration and problem-solving. Sand and water can introduce early ideas about quantity, shape and cause and effect. Songs can support language, rhythm and counting, while imaginative play gives children opportunities to communicate, cooperate and make sense of familiar experiences.

Teachers thoughtfully prepare experiences and remain close by to support, encourage and extend learning when the moment is right. Children also have the freedom to make choices, return to activities that interest them and discover what happens when they try something new.

Spaces that invite discovery

Our indoor and outdoor environments give children different ways to move, create, investigate and play throughout the day.

Children enjoy experiences including books and storytelling, creative arts, music and movement, PE, sensory play, sand and water, time in the garden, outdoor learning and imaginative play in areas such as the mud kitchen. These varied experiences give children opportunities to use their bodies, their senses and their imaginations as they learn.

English is the primary language of teaching and communication at Dovecote. Children are also introduced to additional languages, including Arabic and Spanish, giving them early exposure to different languages and cultures.

Learning designed around your child

No two children develop in exactly the same way. Our teachers take time to understand each child’s interests, needs and stage of development, then use that understanding to shape what comes next.

This means children are not expected to follow a fixed programme in the same way or at the same pace. Some may become absorbed in a story, others in building, painting, movement or exploring outdoors. Teachers recognise these interests as opportunities for learning and provide the right balance of support, encouragement and challenge.

Close communication with parents helps us understand each child more fully and provides continuity between home and nursery.

Growing in confidence and independence

The early years are also a time when children begin to discover just how much they can do for themselves.

At Dovecote, children are encouraged to make choices, communicate their needs, build friendships and take an increasingly active part in everyday routines. These small moments of independence matter, from choosing an activity to helping tidy away or taking turns with a friend.

Kindness is part of these everyday experiences too. Through sharing, helping, listening and including others, children begin to understand how their actions affect the people and world around them.

By feeling secure, known and encouraged, children gain the confidence to explore more widely, try new things and enjoy learning, building strong foundations for the next stage of their education.
