Why Play Matters in the Early Years
At Dovecote Nursery, play is much more than a way to fill the day. It is how young children begin to understand themselves, other people and the world around them.
Mena Press, Group Nursery Academic Lead at Dovecote Nursery, recently joined Helen Farmer on Dubai Eye 103.8’s Eye on Education to discuss the importance of play-based learning during the early years.
From painting and water play to stories and imaginative activities, children have opportunities to explore ideas, make choices and learn through first-hand experiences. Skills such as counting and recognising letters can develop naturally through these everyday moments, supported by thoughtful routines and carefully planned learning spaces.
Mena also highlighted the importance of strong relationships between nursery and home. When children feel secure, understood and supported by the adults around them, they are better able to explore independently and enjoy new experiences.
Parents are an important part of this partnership at Dovecote, with opportunities to join children in the classroom, share stories and become part of nursery life.
For young children, meaningful learning does not need to look like a lesson. Very often, it begins with the freedom to play.
